Reviews

There are many volumes of biography and background, as well as almost innumerable interpretations, of the works of William Blake. Over the years, some fine illustrated introductory books -- by Raymond Lister, Kathleen Raine, and others -- have been available. William Vaughan's offering is both comparatively up to date on biographical information and helpful without being intrusive in offered interpreations of Blake's works. The book is very well illustrated with a number of the well-known images from Blake's illuminated works and paintings, but also with a good selection of much less familiar works that offer new or unusual insights. Vaughan's style is solid without being pretentious, and certainly is inviting to the general reader and beginner. Since the used copies of this book are so inexpensive, it is also a real bargain. I recommend it with enthuiasm.
